Hartland Boy Invents Reusable Decals for Legos

I found this article about an 11 year old boy from Hartland, Wisconsin that invented reusable decals that you can use on Legos or other building bricks. Greyson MacLean took his product to the Toy Fair 2011 in New York City. Well, sort of. He actually was not able to attend because he is not old enough, you have to be 18 years of age to set up a booth. His parents and other relatives took his product there for him.
Greyson calls his new product Brixstix, which he first launched in January of this year. They are now in more than 50 store in 20 states. Retailers in other countries have shown interest and the family has been in contact with International distributors.
I think that it is awesome that an 11 year old is doing this. I do feel that he has had some help and motivation from his family, but that is alright. If he has his family encouraging and helping him along the way then he will have an easier time succeeding and continuing as he grows into adulthood.
His kind of thinking and motivation will only improve our future.

  1. In reading sbout the 11 yer old's invention, the first thing that cme to mind was the movie "Big". The kid wished he was big. His wish came true but he didn't know anything about the ault world. He stumbled on a job as a toy cnsultant. He was great at it because he knew what kids wanted sice he ws one. This kid has a lot of creativity. But it is helped by his parents. His mem used her creativity to invent soemthing also. I think it is more nurture than nature due to the fact his parents must encourage his creativity.
Great ideas surly can come from some humble beginnings. Isn't that how Apple Computers started?

  2. I agree with Dan. I think it is amazing that this 11 year old has invented something, even if for a toy. However, it appears to come from the type of family orientation that they have. Though he had the support and help of his family, this 11 year old will more than likely have success as an entreprenuer some day. Accomplishing something like this at a young age will only help to motivate him more! Makes me wonder if other entreprenuers have this same type of family orientation growing up?!

  3. All it takes is action applied to an idea. It's great to see parents that support a young person's ideas like this. The experience and the confidence building of such an undertaking will be life changing for this child. As long as their is a need or want, there can be a product to address that need and anyone can be the provider of that product, you just have to be able to see the need and the answer. A child can sometimes see so clearly.

  4. Awesome story. The encouragement is so great by his parents, and able to make it happen for an 11 year old. Sometimes kids do have creative ideas and they are crushed. To take it to this level and then succeed will build confidence not only for him, but for others with creative ideas.

  5. This is the type of spirit and entrepreneurship needed in schools. You really can't teach that kind of creativity and drive. They really should find a way to instill this kind of curiosity and motivation in more children.

  6. Great article, having a 6 year old boy myself, I know he's tapped into a never-ending industry in terms of legos and their long standing success in the toy market. Hopefully his parents help to launch his idea, and invest the profits into his education.
