McDonald's takes aim at "McJob" with U.S. hiring spree

The global restaurant chain said it plans to hire as many as 50,000 new U.S. employees -- ranging from restaurant crew to managers -- on April 19. The move would increase the hamburger company's U.S. workforce by 7.7 percent to 700,000, but such hiring is typical in the lead up to the busy summer months. "Our total hires are similar to past years, but the goal of hiring 50,000 people in one day across the U.S. is unique," McDonald's spokeswoman Ashlee Yingling told Reuters. The April hiring event is preparation for the busy summer months. "But these are not just seasonal jobs. It's a mix of permanent and temporary jobs," Yingling said. I thought this was an interesting way to hire can you imagine the HR nightmare this is going to be. But the fact that they are hiring is good; they had a 2.7% increase of sales in Feb. I'm not sure why they think this is going to dispell the myth of it being a dead end job but good for them.

  1. Once again McDonald's is making an attempt to steal the spotlight. A genuine hiring event would be better served if done over a steady pace, with solid review of each candidate. How can they possibly think hiring 50,000 people in one day makes sense. I hope their Human Resources department is hiring to work through all the details. McDonald's is well know for Marketing strategies, but I can see this event becoming a poor example of how they go about bringing more people into the company. Imagine the poor publicity if they can't handle all the information produced to support the volume of people hired. Should be interesting on April 19th, I will have to make a note to read the news the next day on how it turned out.

  2. McDonald's is all about image. This is just a publicity stunt.I agree. I don't see how this is going to stop the term of McJobs. A dead end job is a dead end job, I don't care what you call it.

  3. I am sure McDonalds can handle the hiring process. There is alot of pre-work that goes into hiring and my guess is alot of the pre-work will be done prior to the 19th.
However it is great more people will be working but how amany can support a family now a days on $16k -$17k. I am in full support of people starting careers out at McDonalds but with that kind of money above minimum wage or not is it really increasing the unemeployement rate. How many high school kids will be working for the first time and that stat will most likly not be shared. I am all for people receiving assistance while working at the local Micky Dees, I mean I would rather people trying recieve assitstance then thiose who just sit around but the goverment and McDonalds can grand stand on April 19th and say look at the unemployement rate it is better then yesterday. But what they aren't sharing is first time workers and people who used to make well above the McDonalds wages now forced to work in a fast food resturant.
Lets face american people flipping burgers is not the answer to our economic struggles. Every little bit helps so if they pull it off great for McDonalds. But hello is it really a raise in unemeployement. I guess statistically it is but the sufferign continues.
